Government's response to menopause report published

In July 2022, the Women and Equalities Committee published a report which warned that the impact of menopause was causing the UK economy to "haemorrhage talent".

It said a lack of support was pushing women out of work by insensitive and rigid sickness policies.

The report made 12 recommendations aimed at giving working women more rights.

In its response to the report, the Government rejected outright five of the committee's proposals, including:

  1. Producing model menopause policies.

  2. A recommendation for the government to work with a large public sector employer to "develop and pilot a specific menopause leave policy".

  3. Make menopause a protected discrimination characteristic under the Equality Act.

However, the Government has confirmed that it will appoint a ‘menopause employment champion’, who will drive forward work with employers on menopause workplace issues and spearhead a proposed employer-led communications campaign.
