Furlough: 1.3m employees reported as furloughed on HMRC portals opening day

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme online portal opened on Monday morning and HMRC has reported the following statistics, which appear to show the scheme is working much better than expected:
185,000 firms submitted claims
1,300,000 were employees reported as furloughed
Total value of £1.5bn
