Employers beware - penalty for an aggravated breach of employment law quadruples on 6 April 2019

March 29, 2019

In December 2018, the government published the Good Work Plan, its response to the Taylor Review of Employment Practice, described as the “biggest package of workplace reforms for over 20 years”.

One proposed amendment will come into force on the 6 April 2019, which will quadruple the maximum penalty for an aggravated breach of employment law from £5,000 to £20,000. This may apply in situations where an employer has already lost an employment status case on broadly comparable facts but defends a similar one in the future (following all the recent cases regarding the gig economy).
