Does expressing opposition to same sex adoption amount to religious discrimination?

November 10, 2017

A Christian, non-executive director of an NHS Trust claimed that he had been removed from office as a result of expressing his religious beliefs, after giving a series of television and media interviews concerning his opposition to adoption by same-sex couples.

The tribunal held that there was no direct discrimination because the reason he had been removed was due to repeatedly speaking to the media without first informing the Trust, despite having been requested to do so, and was unable or unwilling to distinguish between his personal views and what was appropriate for someone in a high-profile position to say to the media.

It is expected the decision will be appealed.
