Government promises action on workplace dress codes and high heels

March 10, 2017

The House of Commons has discussed the issue relating to dress codes and high heels in the workplace. 150,000 people have signed a petition calling for it to be illegal for employers to require female employees to wear high heels at work.

Caroline Dinenage, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, responded promising that the government intends to take strong action to tackle sex discrimination at work, including discriminatory dress codes. While the government believes that the current discrimination law is adequate, it recognises that some employers are unaware of the law, or even choose to flout it.

The debate follows a recent candidate at Boots opticians being refused to undertake the second part of her interview, because she was not appropriately dressed.
