Four men given custodial sentences for modern slavery offences

June 17, 2016

Four men have been given sentences of imprisonment at Cardiff Crown Court for offences of modern slavery, kidnap and assault.

Three men from the same family were convicted of requiring two victims to perform forced or compulsory labour. One of the victims was controlled for 20 years. This case is one of the first convictions under the Modern Slavery Act 2015 (MSA 2015), which came into force in July 2015.

There are three criminal offences under the MSA 2015:

  • Slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour.

  • Human trafficking.

  • Committing any offence with the intent to commit human trafficking.

An individual (for example, a director or officer) is subject to a maximum statutory penalty of life imprisonment following conviction for either a slavery or trafficking offence.
